This course offers you the equivalent of the second year of an undergraduate degree in accounting and finance. For those who want to widen their knowledge and skills in accounting field, it has been designed to develop the essential knowledge and competences required for a better understanding of the accountancy and tax regulatory field and duties of an accountant, and what it takes to succeed in accounting and finance field.

Assessment methods 
In order to successfully complete this course, a learner MUST complete mandatory units and optional units totaling 120 credits, to gain this Level 5 qualification.

This course will be graded as follows: Pass, Merit and Distinction.

A range of assessment tools will be used, and this might include assessment through:

  • A research activity resulting in the compilation of a report
  • An academic paper or article for publication
  • The compilation of a case study
  • A critical review and evaluation of a chosen company’s policies, procedures and systems
  • A set project completed for an employer (also known as an ‘employer-engagement’ activity)
  • The production of a portfolio of evidence relating to a particular unit

Unit Title; Level, Credit Unit aim
Financial Reporting

(Level 5, 30 credit). Mandatory.

The aims of this unit are to ensure that students have a sound understanding of the techniques of double entry accounting and can apply its principles in recording transactions, adjusting financial records and preparing non-complex financial statements.
 Financial Management

(Level 5, 30 credit). Mandatory.

The unit aim is to develop the financial management skills for those who manage or seek to manage the performance, risk and financial decision-making needs of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and small and medium practices (SMPs).

 

Financial and Management Control

(Level 5, 30 credit). Mandatory.

The aim of this unit is to develop the financial management skills of those who manage or seek to provide information for performance management, continuous improvement, budgetary and financial control and the management of internal risk in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and small and medium practices (SMPs)
Business taxation

(Level 5, 15 credit). Mandatory.

The aim of this unit is to enable individuals to understand taxation as it affects small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and small and medium practices (SMPs). To provide individuals with the skills to prepare basic tax computations and advise others of the effects of taxation and impact of tax on decision-making.
Quantitative method

(Level 5, 15 credit). Optional

This unit will enable learners to further develop understanding and skills in the application of quantitative methods appropriate to support decision-making in organisations.
Assurance

(Level 5, 15 credit). Optional

The aim of this unit is to provide learners with an understanding of the concept of assurance. Learners will consider the responsibilities of different stakeholders when completing assurance engagements and will gain an understanding of internal controls and their importance in assurance engagements as well as gain a practical understanding of how to gather the required evidence for all assurance activities.

Learning approach

One-to-one Zoom sessions with your lecturers will be provided, as well as interactive and informative webinars. Learners can also get help from a community of students/tutors in an online social learning forum to help along the journey. All the learning materials can be found online. Certification and awarding body

Upon a successful completion of this programme as stipulated by ATHE, you will be awarded the ATHE Level 5 Accounting. ATHE regulates qualifications, examinations and assessments in England.

Progression and profession pathways

Upon a successful completion this course, you will gain an accredited qualification that will provide the pathway to enter a Bachelors’ Degree in the second or third year in a number of recognised Universities in the UK. You can progress to the following.

Entry to:

  • Employment in a managerial level job roles and other related sectors
  • ATHE Level 6 Diploma in accounting
